What are implant-retained dentures?

Implant-retained dentures are teeth restorations that can be used when all or most of the teeth are lost in a person. A denture is supported by a few dental implants. The implants are strategically placed in a way that they provide high stability to the restoration. There are different types of mechanisms through which the denture can be attached to the implants. Implant-retained dentures eliminate the need for adhesives and bonding agents as used in conventional dentures. Since the restoration is very stable, patients find implant-retained dentures to be highly comfortable.

What do I need to get implant-retained dentures?

Implant-retained dentures are supported by dental implants. Two to four implants are strategically placed in the supporting bone of the patient. There should be sufficient supporting bone in the areas where the implants are planned to be inserted. We perform a thorough check of oral health of patients before recommending implant-retained dentures.

How are teeth restored using implant-retained dentures?

The denture is usually made of an acrylic base and porcelain teeth. The restoration is designed to replicate the appearance of natural teeth and gums. The restoration process takes place in two phases. During the first phase, the implants are inserted in the supporting bone. During the second phase, dentures are fit in place with the help of attachment mechanisms.

We perform a thorough check of oral health to see if there is sufficient jawbone to hold the implant. Impressions of gums are taken to create a temporary restoration. The surgery where the implants are inserted in the supporting bone requires a local anesthetic. Once the implants are placed in the supporting bone, they are left to heal for few months. A temporary may be put in place in such a way that it does not transfer bite force to implants.

In the second phase, dentists open up the gums to expose some portion of the implant head. An abutment is fixed over the implants. The final denture is fabricated in the lab using impressions of gums. Our periodontist checks for fit of denture and clips it in place with the help of bar or ball mechanism.

Patients are advised on how to maintain oral health and hygiene. The dentures should be cleaned thoroughly to avoid gum infection. With proper care, implant-retained dentures can no doubt bring out a healthy smile in the patient.
