Implant Retained Dentures Peoria AZ

Being toothless need not have to make life complicated as was the case a few decades ago. Thanks to the developments in the field of prosthodontics, today there are some wonderful restorations to replace lost teeth and make life easy. Dentures are a replica of the dentition. They have a base which mimics the appearance of gums and porcelain teeth replacements which are aligned neatly. The drawbacks of conventional dentures are that they tend to slip out from the mouth and the chewing efficiency is not that great. The negative factors of dentures led to the introduction of implant-retained dentures. When a denture is supported by dental implants, there is great stability making it very comfortable for patients. We recommend implant-retained dentures to our valuable patients who visit us from various parts of Peoria, Sun City, Good Year, Avondale, Surprise and surrounding communities. Dr. Bohra performs dental implant surgeries at our Avondale and Surprise office. The experience, knowledge and skills of our periodontist has helped us to a great extent in creating healthy smiles for our patients.

How do implant-retained dentures work?

Dentures replace the complete set of teeth in a row. They are fabricated using porcelain and acrylic materials. Conventional dentures are normally supported by the gums using adhesives. This technique causes a lot of discomforts because the restoration does not stay in place. Implant-retained dentures are restorations which are supported by dental implants. Two or four implants are strategically inserted in the supporting bone over which the dentures are supported. Ball or bar mechanism may be used to fix the denture over the implant. This gives the restoration high stability.

Implant-retained dentures procedure

At our dental office both patient's oral care and comfort are important for us. We perform a thorough evaluation of the oral health of the patient. X-rays may be taken to check the status of the jawbone. The bone should have sufficient volume to hold the implants. The restoration process may take about 3-6 months to a year. It takes place in two to three phases.

In the first phase, dental implants are inserted in the planned positions in the supporting bone. Local anesthesia is used to numb the surgical sight. An incision is made in the gums and bony recess is created using dental drills. The implants are torqued in place and the gums are sutured back after the implant placement. The restoration is left to heal for next few months. Our team prepares an acrylic temporary denture to aid the biting and chewing functions. This restoration is bonded in place such that the implants are not loaded.

Our dentist recommends periodic visits during which we check the status of implant integration with supporting bone. After the healing period, the permanent dentures are fabricated at the lab based on impressions taken at our office. The appropriate holding mechanism is put in place (ball or bar). The dentures are finally fixed in place. The dentures are removable. This helps patients clean the dentures at night.
